Critical Sources
Critical Sources: Writing about Art in the Bay Area is a three-part series of workshops co-hosted by The Lab in conjunction with the launch of Art Practical, a new platform bringing together Shotgun Review, Happenstand.com and Talking Cure Quarterly. The series offers perspectives on how critical dialogue is essential to the health of the visual arts community, while providing strategies for how to write critically about art. Critical in the title conveys the double meaning of analytical and absolutely necessary. Conversations and small-group discussions combine with writer workshops to examine dynamically the state of criticism in the Bay Area and propose alternate methods. Suggested readings will be available via The Lab‚s website and artpractical.com.
Part One will take place on October 10 from 3-5pm at The Lab. This first installment will take the form of a conversation with selected critics and curators on the pressing need to expand critical dialogue in the Bay Area. Speakers include writer, critic and curator Glen Helfand; Chair of the Visual and Critical Studies at CCA Tirza Latimer; and Flavorpill managing editor, writer and artist Matt Sussman. Founder and director of David Cunningham Projects David Cunningham will be on hand as a special guest in order to engage the audience with SYZYGY, the current exhibition at The Lab which he juried with Misako Inaoka. Patricia Maloney, managing editor of Art Practical, will describe the objectives and upcoming launch of this new online contemporary art journal.
