Farm City Tour for Main Market Co-op!
Farm City: the Education of an Urban Farmer, a new book released June 2009, by Novella Carpenter shares stories of her adventures of urban farming on a squatted lot a down-and-out neighborhood of Oakland, CA.  Her background growing up in the Inland NW, education and entry into urban food production in Seattle and hilarious, upfront story-telling style make this an entertaining NW read.  Better yet, for those interested in producing more of their own food, it's a book that showcases what to do as much as what not to do, and immerses you in her farm-to-table highlights and struggles.

Main Market Co-op is pleased to bring Novella to Spokane for our first 'Mixin It Up! chef demo, as we enter the arena of urban agriculture with our planned rooftop greenhouse and gardens.  And, because her stories include what we stand for in other areas as well... recycling, sharing, embracing diversity, and building community around good, healthy food.

The ticketed portion of her time here is at Sante Restaurant
Tuesday, October 20th, 5:30-7:00pm
Together, we will taste a variety of rabbit preparations by local chefs and then learn about how to best process and use the whole animal.  A staple of survival for all levels of society during WWII, the rabbit is fast becoming the new "chicken" for backyard food producers.

Join us just afterward for an open-to-the-public and free reading, and more general urban farming presentation by Novella at 7:30pm upstairs at Auntie's Bookstore.

The next day, 10/21, Novella delivers a similar urban farming presentation at SCC's Hagan Center from 9:15-10:30am.

All proceeds from the Sante event and book sales benefit Main Market Co-op as we raise funds to stock the shelves and open the doors.

Thank you to our sponsors of this event, The Hagan Center at Spokane Community College and The Community Building Foundation.  And also to our event participants, Sante Restaurant & Charcuterie and Auntie's Bookstore, our pals down Main Street.
