VSA Texas and Conspire Theatre Team Up for
Stand Up for Mental Health at Cap City Comedy Club

On Sunday, August 24, at Cap City Comedy Club at 8120 Research Blvd #100, Austin TX, ten comics from the Austin area will debut their new stand-up acts.  Doors will open at 6:00 pm and the show starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 with a 2-item minimum food purchase per person at the event.

VSA Texas is presenting Stand Up For Mental Health for a 2nd year to reach mental health professionals as well as people in the criminal justice, counseling and peer advocacy fields. Stand-up comedy has proven itself to be a great way of building confidence and fighting public stigma for people with a mental illness diagnosis. "Doing stand-up comedy is a great way to give the public a completely different perspective on what it means to have a mental health issue," says Celia Hughes, Executive Director of VSA Texas. "People with mental illness are often perceived as scary or dangerous, but in this show, you'll see how funny and creative they can be."

This year the participants include women from Conspire Theatre, which creates theatre with women during incarceration and after. Similar to Stand Up for Mental Health, the organization's goal is to reduce internal and external stigma for women who have experienced jail or prison. "The vast majority of women who been incarcerated have experienced trauma, addiction, or other mental health issues. We're excited to see the humor and creativity the program brings out in our Conspire performers," says Michelle Dahlenburg, Artistic Director.

Stand-up comedy is also great therapy. According to David Granirer, founder of Stand Up for Mental Health whose work was featured in the VOICE Award winning documentary Cracking Up, "Laughing in the face of pain makes people go from despair to hope, and hope is crucial to anyone struggling with a mental illness."

About Conspire Theatre. Conspire Theatre offers incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their allies a healing and empowering experience through theatre and creative writing. Our vision is that every woman realizes her potential as a creative, worthy being. Michelle Dahlenburg is the Artistic Director. To learn more, please visit www.conspiretheatre.org.
