Artists for Congressman Jim McDermott -- Featuring "Iraq In Fragments"
At the present time, Congressman McDermott is a defendant in a civil lawsuit instigated by House majority leader John Boehner (Tom DeLay's replacement) over his role in releasing to the news media a tape recording of a 1997 cell phone conversation between then House Speaker Newt Gingrich and other influential Republicans conspiring to circumvent a House Ethics panel sanction of Speaker Gingrich. This case will be heard before the full panel of the Circuit Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit on Oct. 31st. "Artists for Congressman Jim McDermott" aims to express our gratitude for Congressman McDermott's efforts while also helping to support him in his many challenges.
The event includes a sneak preview screening of "Iraq in Fragments"
Winner of three awards at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival (Best Documentary Director, Best Documentary Cinematography, and Best Documentary Editing) as well as the Grand Jury Prize at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the Nestor Almendro Award for Courage in Filmmaking at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, Iraq In Fragments illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, building a vivid picture of a country pulled in different directions by religion and ethnicity. Seattle-based James Longley filmed in verite style, with no scripted narration, allowing the film to powerfully explore the lives of ordinary Iraqis: people whose thoughts, beliefs, aspirations, and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq today.
