Rahim AlHaj "Journey" CD Release Concert with special guests!
Master oud player Rahim Alhaj's new retrospective CD "Journey" captures his ongoing journey as a musician, composer, performer, activist, humanitarian, husband and friend. Nine of the ten pieces on "Journey" are taken from Rahim's seven previous CDs. Included are original pieces for solo oud ("Oak", "The Second Baghdad", "Sunset of The City"), oud, percussion and string quintet ("Going Home"), oud and string quartet ("Friendship"). There is the brilliant collaboration with Indian sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan ("Common Destination"), the traditional Iraqi maqam performed on oud and Middle East percussion ("Maqam Rast) and a song, featuring just Rahim's oud and voice, the sublime "Iraqi Lullaby". Finally there is the brand new composition "Do You Know That I Love You", available on "Journey" for the first time.
The evening's intimate concert will reflect the CD as Rahim performs in different configurations with special guests including his regular percussionist Issa Malluf and special guests David Felberg (violin), Megan Holland (violin), Justin Pollock (viola), and James Holland (cello) of Chatter Ensemble It promises to be a special evening of music.
"Journey" shows a master at the very apex of his craft. An artist that through his music, as stated in D.A. Sonneborn Ph.D's liner notes, "speaks directly to the most fundamental human emotions - to love, loneliness, anger, compassion, to the human condition...". Rahim Alhaj is on a journey of the heart, the soul and the mind. His is a journey that is as much about the leaving as it is the coming home. It is a journey that is well worth joining, and sharing and one which you can be part of live on August 23.
