Thursday June 12 DARLINGSIDE, THE BALLROOM THIEVES and TALL HEIGHTS $20 advance / $25 at the door 8:30 doors / 9:30 show www.darlingside.com www.ballroomthieves.com www.tallheights.com
A night of huge fun featuring three bands that certainly could be headlining shows anywhere on their own. All good friends, these fine musicians figured a night of revelry would be appropriate here at the Lizard so get ready... this will be epic!
DARLINGSIDE With a quartet of distinct voices clustered around a single microphone, Darlingside effortlessly draw audiences into their lush, dynamic musical world. The band's sound, characterized by classical strings, tight vocal arrangements, bluegrass and rock instrumentation, and smart lyricism, is the product of complete collaboration among the four close friends. The group has no frontman; instead, lead vocals are traded from moment to moment, and each song features a new combination of instruments and textures, pulling heavily from folk, retro-pop, barbershop, and chamber music.
THE BALLROOM THIEVES Truly a high-energy rock trio performing under the guise of well-crafted, emotionally sincere folk, the Thieves have released two well-received EPs since getting their start three years ago. With a strong presence in the Boston area and New England, they have received press from local blog luminaries such as Allston Pudding, who said of the Thieves live performance, "The intensity and passion The Ballroom Thieves had for the songs they delivered- it was hard to believe it was just three of them." The Thieves have begun to branch out from New England, touring around the country with well-known stalwarts such as The Lone Bellow, Dispatch, Railroad Earth and Houndmouth, among others.
TALL HEIGHTS In the summer of 2010, Tim Harrington and Paul Wright were playing for spare change in Boston's Faneuil Hall Marketplace. In a few short years since, Tall Heights has headlined packed listening rooms across the country, toured down to Austin, TX to showcase at South By Southwest Music Festival, and performed alongside national acts like Laura Marling, Ryan Montbleau, and Andrew Belle.
For the duo's debut full-length effort, Man of Stone (May, 2013), Tall Heights hits the home studio, sinking deeper into the vast world they've meticulously built for two. The title track and first single, Man of Stone, recalls a time when cavemen documented day-to-day existence on the walls of their stone-sheltered dwellings. "Emblems of cavemen they taught me / the importance of typing in bold," contextualizes the rest of the record and challenges a careful listener to view each song as a vital documentation of what is both banal and extraordinary. The record exists in a fire-lit, shadowy space for their growing army of fans to inhabit. After two powerful EPs, there has been a growing cry for more from these young artists, and Tall Heights delivers with an LP of grand vision and scale.
