ASYLUM
Only Child and The Muse Brooklyn with support from Brooklyn Arts Council Present:
ASYLUM
ASYLUM is set in the 1970s when mass closings of psychiatric hospitals across the U.S. were underway. Created in collaboration with the cast and designers, this show is a mix of devised theatre and aerial/circus choreography. Our source material includes Nellie Bly's 10 Days in a Madhouse, Emily Dickenson's poetry, Michael Foucault's Madness and Civilization, Bradley Lewis' essays, Christopher Payne's Asylum, Darby Penney and Peter Stastny's The Lives They Left Behind, and writings by the Icarus Project to name a few. We've translated the knowledge we've gained through our research into an artistic conversation between projected photographs, aerial movement and voiceover to tell the story of four patients deemed unfit for society and an over-extended nurse making their way through a crumbling system.
ASYLUM is created in collaboration with: Director: Nicki Miller Assistant Director: Amanda Goble Cast: Sloan Bradford, Nicki Miller, Kendall Rileigh, Samantha Sterman, Craig Whitehouse Projection Photography and Design: Carrie Firestone Music Composition: Walken Schweigart (and others) Sound Design: Laura Sisskin-Fernandez Costume Design: Juanita Cardenas Production Interns: Emily Hursh, Ayla Weisz
