True2Life: Everyday Activities and Youth Changing the World
BAVC Youth Programs, in partnership with Podshow, Adobe, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's Digital Media Advisory Council (DMAC), invites you to True2Life: Everyday Activities and Youth Changing the World.
This one-day, special event has been crafted to showcase youth as cultural producers and the Bay Area as a model in linking youth to community and industry change. Youth media is poised to take over the world and BAVC Youth Programs is at the front of this dynamic and ever-shifting landscape.
Bringing youth, industry and community together, the day will feature two primary panel sessions: Mix and Mash: The Interactive Future of Music; and Minor(s) Shake-Up in Cyberspace: Youth Bloggers, Pop Culture and National Security; as well as a screening of the best of recent youth produced videos.
In addition, the entire event will be documented by youth participants and podcasted to 24 million viewers/listeners by our presenting partner organization Podshow.com

Session Overviews Mix and Mash: The Interactive Future of Music. The Mix and Mash session is intended to demonstrate how youth are pushing large-scale industries (like the recording industry) to evolve and change their most basic business models (music licensing, distribution and sampling). The natural inclination of young people to borrow, mix and re-produce new works pushes the boundaries of what constitutes ownership of talent and has raised more than a few eyebrows and legal liabilities along the way. Our challenge is to create spaces where youth can share their creative process with others and continue to be inspired by the popular media they consume, but to do so within legal limits. At the session, well-known hip-hop artist Shock G will play original music and, during a panel discussion, BAVC youth trainees will "mix and mash" alongside professional sound engineers, including Chief Xcel from Blackalicious. Shock G will review the outcomes at the end of the session, with the goal of posting one of the youth pieces on Creative Commons (a nonprofit organization that advocates for and offers flexible copyright licenses for creative works).
Panelists will include representatives from: ASCAP; Podshow; Creative Commons; Negativland; and AOL Time Warner
Minor(s) Shake-Up in Cyberspace: Youth Bloggers, Pop Culture and National Security Technorati cites that, on average, a new weblog is created every second of every day. Youth occupy a significant space, presence and challenge to cyberspace and increasingly their presence is being felt through blogs. How are their free speech experiments, micro-commerce practices, and developing politics changing the rules of the Internet? This discussion moves beyond youth voice and expression to engage policy, economic developm
