Event
garden walk
Focusing on the neighborhood of Fort Greene Brooklyn, this leafy historic neighborhood has hidden gems of urban gardens. The self-guided tour encompasses 10 private gardens and 3 community gardens. The tour also includes stops at the Irondale Theatre and GreenspacesNY for indoor & outdoor installations of "green grafitti" art by edina tokodi (http://mosstika.com)
Highlights of the tour include a reconstructed Roman ruin on a double lot hidden behind a Brownstone, the final resting place of legendary jazz singer Betty Carter(her ashes were sprinkled under a weeping cherry tree that she planted in 1980 and lovingly tended), a commercial rooftop with a hydroponic garden, a chicken coop and bees, a tripple lot with a large vegetable plot and a garden that looks like it belongs on a Hollywood set!
Tickets and the self-guided map must be picked up on the day of the tour outside of Greene Grape/Provisions at 753 Fulton Ave. (on the corner of S. Portland Avenue) in Fort Greene. The tour should take 2 - 3 hours. Map in hand entitles you to discounts at local restaurants with gardens.
