An Evening with Venus DeMars, Scott Alexander, and Simon Calder
A classical bassoonist/ethnomusicologist, a founder of Twin Cities Dark Glam rock fixture All The Pretty Horses, and a U of M professor who all happen to be vibrant and distinct singer-songwriters join forces for tag-team style performance.
Classically trained bassoonist and ethnomusicologist, Scott Alexander performs a sort of "non-repetitive pop." There's no verse-chorus-verse-chorus-OhBabyOhBaby-chorus. Despite abandoning traditional song structures that have been in place for millennia, Alexander does not leave his listeners disoriented. Instead, he creates something more catchy than experimental, and more clever than academic.
Simon Calder is a Minneapolis-based British singer-songwriter-storyteller. He performs monthly at the Kitty Cat Klub's "Singer-Songwriter Extravaganza" mini-festival series, which he also created and runs.
Venus de Mars has been a staple of the underground music scene both here in Minneapolis and around the globe for nearly two decades. Forming the bandAll The Pretty Horses in 1994, Venus combined elements of punk, goth andglam to create a truly unique sound. Seeking greater independence and control over her music Venus teamed with New York producers, Super Buddha (superbuddhamusic.com) [debbie harry / scissors sisters / antony & the johnsons] for the 2006 solo release; Trashed and Broken Hearted (iTunes).
