NEW ARTiculations Dance Theatre presents
NEW ARTiculations Dance Theatre presents ÂNew ArtÂ; a concert of new modern dance pieces created by emerging and established local artists to be performed June 5-6 at Pima Community College Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre at the West Campus.  NEW ART company members created seven new pieces for the concert, and two works come from local guest artists Charlotte Adams and Amber Duke.

This season, NEW ART decided to focus on artists living locally or with strong ties to AZ.  Eating locally is becoming a popular way to be greener, why not ÂDance LocallyÂ?  Supporting local artists puts dollars directly back into the Tucson economy.  Also, since these dancers live in Tucson, they didnÂt have to travel long distances, thus saving precious fuel and resources.  Continuing with its ÂGuest Artist SeriesÂ, the company will perform two works by guest choreographers.  Amber Duke, who graduated with an MFA from the University of Arizona School of Dance and currently teaches dance at Flowing Wells High School contributes ÂThree Cups of TeaÂ, danced by Amy Barr-Holm, Renee Blakeley, Polly Deason, Kimi Eisele, Corinne Hobson, and Amanda Morse.  Charlotte Adams, a founding member of Tenth Street Danceworks, one of TucsonÂs first modern companies, who spends half her year in Tucson, contributes a duet.  ÂKatie Feels Guilty About Library Fines.  Amy feels guilty about lost dogs.  They both feel guilty about JenÂs things.  Their petticoats are cumbersome.   TheyÂre haunted by unanswered phone calls.  Set to the awkward beauty of Circus Maximus and Accordian Tribe, the dance pushes them to tackle, fall, and stumble to redemption in a new piece by Charlotte Adams created in collaboration with Katie Rutterer and Amy Barr-Holm.Â

Artistic Director Katie Rutterer is contributing two pieces - ÂThe Spaces BetweenÂ, and Â15 MinutesÂ.  The former is a quartet for four women set to David Byrne, which Âexplores my fear of silence and my shynessÂ.  The latter is a Bob ÂFosse Âesque piece, in which dancers wear red and black leotards, fishnets, and high heels and dance with stools.  Company members Blakeley, Eisele, Hobson, Morse, and Rutterer each compete for their own Â15 minutes of fame.  ÂI really just wanted to do something showy and funÂ, says Rutterer.  ÂAmerica has a love for people who are famous for just being famous.  ItÂs not about being the best, itÂs about being the last one standing.

Eisele contributes ÂDew Point, about the waitÂand often the madnessÂthat precedes the summer monsoon season. ÂI remembered working here in a studio in July several years ago sweating to death, Eisele says, explaining that the movements start out sluggish as the dancers  Hobson, Morse, and Rutterer - keep looking up to the skies in anticipation. Then it builds into a frenzy of expectation. ÂWhen the clouds build and you think itÂs going to come, but then it moves on, thereÂs that feeling of intense frustration and impatience. You have to just breathe. And wait.Â

As coincidence would have it, the dancers get their pay-off in Barr-HolmÂs ÂStanding Water, a trio (Hobson, Morse, and Rutterer again) set to music by Radiohead that is performed on a large sheet of plastic, which has been doused with a thin layer of water.  The dancers wear swimsuits and tank tops and get more and more drenched as they slide across the stage, gliding effortlessly on the water. Barr-Holm first created the piece several years ago, but re-did the piece for Thom Lewis Dance March concert. It was such an audience favorite she is reprising it for NEW ART.

Other company members contributing pieces include Renee Blakeley, Amanda Morse, and NEW ART founding member Tammy Rosen.
