The Mark Sandman Music Project Presents: Rose Polenzani and Annabelle Chvostek
Join us for a Mother's Day of beautiful music from the incomparable Rose Polenzani with her friend Annabelle Chvostek!
Annabelle & Rose Rose Polenzani and Annabelle Chvostek met way back in 1998, at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference. Rose was tucked up at the top of the grand stairway, watching people wander in. When Annabelle Chvostek (with short-cropped, bleached hair) rolled in through the revolving doors, Roses sixth-sense rang its bell: Im going to love her music, I just know it. Annabelle, for her part, independently parked herself in the guerilla showcase hotel room where Rose was performing, and they hit it off. Ever since that fateful swapping of the demos, Rose and Annabelle have kept tabs on each other and encouraged each other from afar. They have managed to get on stage together less than ten times in all those years, but are excited to put their kindred spirits back in touch this May, with a handful of New England shows.
About Annabelle Chvostek Born and raised in a musical family in Toronto, Annabelle Chvostek followed her musical path in Montreal, where she earned her degree in interdisciplinary fine arts at Concordia. After several years touring the Ontario-Quebec-New York circuit as a solo artist, Chvostek joined the Wailin' Jennys in 2004, and the rest of the world found out what a Canadian roots fans had known for several years: that Chvostek is a formidable songwriter, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, and a fearless and innovative artist whose beguiling left-of-centre compositions straddle the divide between mainstream roots and acoustic indie pop. After two and a half years of recording and touring with the Jennys', highlights of which included several appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, performing at New York's legendary Town Hall and singing on the Juno Awards telecast, Chvostek has released her much-anticipated solo album, Resilience. "Ms. Chvostek won our hearts and minds... Her show was one of those magical, chemistry-connected sets, with a sense of discovery attached... Singing with pluck and precision, Ms. Chvostek exudes organic musicality, whether when digging into folky roots music or art-pop turf" - Santa Barbara News-Press Nov 2008 "Just gorgeous so musical oh my." Jane Siberry/Issa, Canada
About Rose Polenzani Rose Polenzani grew up singing Barbershop tags around the charcoal grill at family get-togethers, and staring doe-eyed at her uncles Beatles-centric guitar circles. She took piano lessons and minor roles in high school musicals. Her scattered, any-music-will-do excitement found its focus in 1995, when she took an internship with a small folk label, Waterbug records, whose captain was a spirited, weather-beaten genius named Andrew Calhoun. With Calhouns encouragement, Rose wrote and toured as a solo singer-songwriter for the next several years, searching for her musical soul on the national folk circuit. And then she stood still for a while. She found her soul in Somerville, trying to finish her bachelors degree and experiencing an awakening to the vibrant, stalwart local music scene. She worked her way slowly into the heart of musical collaboration in Boston, singing and playing with local favorites Session Americana, Jennifer Kimball, Laura Cortese, Aoife ODonovan, Tim Gearon, Brian Webb, and Anne Heaton. She has pioneered an all-collaborative monthly event SUB ROSA, at the Lizard Lounge, and built a respectable following for her YouTube Channel, where she posts charming and original music videos created in the 6x6 in-box she calls her home office. Nominated for 2007 Best Female Vocalist in the Boston Music Awards, former Rykodisc and Daemon Records recording artist Rose Polenzani won best new song in the 2008 Mountain Stage New Song competition. Her sixth album, When the River Meets the Sea, was recorded live with Session Americana and released October on 2008.
