Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook
The Snapshots Collective is proud to present the Canadian premiere of Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook. This celebration of the music of legendary Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz stars some of Vancouver's top talent, gathered for a limited engagement from Oct. 29 to Nov. 8 at Studio 1398 on Granville Island.
Snapshots takes place in the attic of Sue and Dan, a couple whose marriage has fallen apart after 30 years together. Sue, who is about to leave her husband, has gone to the attic to retrieve a hidden suitcase when Dan unexpectedly comes home early. During this encounter, a box of photographs falls to the floor and leads them to relive the memories of their past selves captured in the snapshots.
Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook flows from the amazing career of Stephen Schwartz, prolific composer/lyricist who first exploded onto Broadway with Godspell and more recently wowed the crowds with Wicked. It's more than merely a revue of songs from Schwartz's many stage shows (in addition to Godspell and Wicked there's Pippin, The Baker's Wife, Children of Eden and others), feature films (Pocahontas, The Prince of Egypt, The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and original CDs. Schwartz found David Stern's script for Snapshots so compelling that he sat down at the piano and reworked much of his material so it made a better fit with the story of a couple looking back on their lives together.
This Snapshots Collective presentation features six strong singers with the equally impressive acting talents needed to carry off a complex tale of life, love and longing. Annabel Kershaw portrays Sue and Stephen Aberle plays Dan, with Jocelyn Gauthier and Warren Kimmel as the couple when they were young adults Susan and Daniel, and Anna Kuman and Daniel Johnston as adolescent Susie and Danny. Directed by Chris McGregor, with Wendy Bross Stuart as Music Director.
Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook previews on October 29 and 30, opening October 31 and running to November 8 at Studio 1398 (atop Festival House on Granville Island). Performances at 8 p.m. (no show on Nov. 2), with 2 p.m. matinees on Nov. 1 and 8.
