Recovery Month 2014 is a paramount time of year in Texas. Following the successes of the First Annual Recovery Film Festival in the North Texas Region, collaboration between NAADAC (National Association of Addiction Professionals), SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), NASW (National Association of Social Workers), Eagle Peer Recovery (Peer Support network under The Collegiate Recovery Program at the University of North Texas), Young People in Recovery, and numerous other regional and community partners have formed to make the now annual film festival and conference a much larger success. This 3 day event plans to educate local students and communities, retain, recruit, and educate addictions/recovery professionals, and reduce stigma in the community.
The North Texas Recovery Conference and Film Festival, held at the University of North Texas, is a multi-day exhibition event. The first portion of all three days (day time) is a traditional conference. This year there will be 23 break out sessions, all offering CEUs for multiple licensed professions. The latter portion of the event (evening) will be used to showcase films about addiction, treatment, and long-term recovery, both from substance use and mental health disorders. Three keynote speakers, Brian Cuban, Rob Weiss, and John Shinholser will wrap up each nights presentation.
Our audience is treatment professionals, persons in recovery, members of the entertainment industry, media representatives, educated moviegoers, the general public, and the student body, many of whom will encounter addiction and mental health illness before the end of their college career.
