OVER THE TAVERN by Tom Dudzick, directed by Donna Davis
A Comedy/Drama by Tom Dudzick, directed by Donna Davis

"Over the Tavern" is Tom Dudzick's play about a family struggling and growing together, based in part on his own childhood growing up in a Polish-American community. Called "one of the biggest grass roots successes in American regional theatres" by Chicago critic Chris Jones, "Over the Tavern" is a funny and heartwarming play that deals with a family growing up over the family tavern in 1959 working class America. Four children are caught between the claustrophobic authoritarianism of Sister Clarissa and an emotionally abusive father. Only their mother, with her good sense, sanity and wry humor, keeps this family afloat.

Donna Davis is an award-winning director with broad experience in the Bay Area. She has directed musicals, comedy, drama, melodrama, cabaret, radio plays, premieres, classics, the 2011 production of "Doubt" for Actors Ensemble, and now she returns to AE for "Over the Tavern."

"Over the Tavern" features a mix of new and familar faces, including Susannah Wood as Sister Clarissa, most recently director of "George is Dead" and Scott Ayres as Chet Pazinski, last seen as Sam in "Honeymoon Motel", both part of our January 2014 collection of 1-acts "Relatively Speaking". Newcomers include Genevieve Smith as Ellen Pazinski, Will Reicher as Rudy, Nandi Drayton as Annie, and Michael O'Connell as Eddie. Costumes by Marjorie Moore, Set Design and Stage Management by Robert Gudmundsson, assisted by Emmy Pierce, with technical contributions from Owen Perry.
