CFF: TRICK BABY (1971) on 16mm
Video Pirates presents Cinedelphia Film Festival April 10-27, 2014
Thursday, April 24, 8:00 PM TRICK BABY (1972, 89 minutes, Dir. Larry Yust) Presented by Exhumed Films on 16mm Introduction by Dan Buskirk $10, no refunds or exchanges.
The deal-of-a-lifetime comes at a great cost for aging Philly con man Blue Howard (Mel Stewart) and his protege, "White Folks" (Kiel Martin), a street kid born of parents of mixed race. With a fortune in swindled cash up-for-grabs and a corrupt cop and gangsters breathing down their necks, Blue and "Folks" have some quick life-changing decisions to make if they're going to survive the next 24-hrs. Filmed on the mean streets of Philadelphia by Upper Darby-born director Larry (HOMEBODIES) Yust and adapted from the novel by the legendary Iceberg Slim (Robert Beck), TRICK BABY is a gritty, low-key crime-drama that deserves to be seen. The city of Philadelphia and locations such as Reading Terminal provide a cold backdrop for a story that looks at racial-social stereotypes from the level of the streets; in the tradition of films like SHAFT (1971), but without the exploitative conventions of most films of the era. (HG)
Shown from a rare, pristine archival 16mm print. Preceded by a selection of '70's TV spots.
