7th Annual Cruz Reynoso Social Justice and Judicial Externship Fellowship Dinner
We would like to invite all of our alums to the 7th Annual Cruz Reynoso Social Justice and Judicial Extern Fellowship Dinner. This year marks the 40th anniversary since the founding of our association. We are celebrating this accomplishment with our theme "40 Years of Progress." Please consider joining us for our event, as we would love to make this a celebration of our rich history and community!
Thanks to the vision and generosity of alumni, law firms, and other supporters, La Raza Law Students Association is realizing its dream of creating a sustainable fellowship to support Latina/o students interested in public interest law. This year La Raza Law Students Association is pleased to announce that it will be awarding two fellowships: the Cruz Reynoso Social Justice Fellowship and the Cruz Reynoso Judicial Externship Fellowship. Our organization will continue to support Latina/o students interested in public interest law as well as financially support a Latina/o student pursuing an unpaid judicial externship. By adding a judicial externship fellowship, we hope to increase the number of Latina/os in the judiciary.
With your help, our fundraising efforts have been successful. Our first year, we raised over $40,000. Since then, we have raised over $30,000 each year. In 2006 we endowed the Cruz Reynoso Social Justice Fellowship. Our current goal is to raise enough funds to endow the Cruz Reynoso Judicial Externship Fellowship.
Last year the Honorable Cruz Reynoso presented Ms. Oriana Sandoval the CRSJF award and Ms. Franchesca Gonzalez the CRSJ Externship award. The fellowship enabled Ms. Sandoval to spend the summer working at the Center for Race, Povery and the Environment in San Francisco, CA, where she worked as a law clerk, focusing on global warming issues. This work included legal research and writing, community organizing, outreach and education with stakeholders in the Central Valley, and involvement in Clean Air Act litigation in the Central Valley. Ms. Sandoval is currently the Co-Chair of the La Raza Law Students Association. The externship fellowship allowed Ms. Gonzalez to work for the Honorable Michael Nash, the presiding judge of the juvenile courts of Los Angeles. Ms. Gonzalez is currently the Recruitment Chair for the La Raza Law Students Association.
