Bitch Birthday Bash/Book Release Party
Oakland, July 24, 2006  With its first book, BitchFest, entering the world and 10 years of success behind it, Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture is finally throwing the celebratory shindig of a decade on Wednesday, August 16th.

This party will rock with a live performances from San Franciso's all-female Led Zeppelin don't-call-them-a-tribute-band ZEPPARELLA, L.A.'s LESLIE AND THE BADGERS, DJ Rock Foxy on vinyl, and Queer Open Mic curator Cindy Emch emceeing the whole shebang. Plus: Performances by SF's all-female hula-hoop supremos The Hoopers; goody-bag giveaways, and more. In anticipation of a pimple-free adolescence and rosy adulthood, Bitch is also hosting a prom-style photo booth, for nostalgic stags and sweethearts alike.

The Bitch Birthday/Book-release Party will be held at 7:30pm in the Rickshaw Stop, with $15 advance tickets and $20 at the door. The Rickshaw Stop is located at 155 Fell Street at Van Ness, and for the purposes of the evening, will be 21+ (Sorry, kids!).

Since 1996, from humble roots as a hand-stapled Oakland zine, Bitch has become a glossy feminist mainstay with a reader circulation of over 50,000.  Now the irreverent icon of hip, smart feminists everywhere, Bitch is looking back at 34 issues of analysis, humor, and reader loyalty in one provocative anthology BitchFest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism from the Pages of Bitch Magazine (Farrar, Straus & Giroux; release date August 8).

Edited by co-founders Andi Zeisler and Lisa Jervis, BitchFests rants, raves, and sharp-eyed essays comprise the best of Bitches past, as well as brand-new pieces written just for the book. As always, the writing will examine pop-culture at its worst and best, with wit, style and the kind of open challenge that meets both Gene Simmons and Camille Paglia head-on.

Of course, as much as BitchFest and the Birthday/Book Party are about cheering on 10 years of hard work, theyre equally about thanking the readers and communities that have cheered Bitch on over the past decade with subscriptions, donations, volunteer labor, and word of mouth. Co-founder Andi Zeisler explains: It's incredibly difficult to stay afloat as an independent magazine, and a big part of the reason Bitch has been around for this long is because the Bay Area is such a vital and supportive place for DIY projects. We want to celebrate both the magazine and the people and places that have helped nurture it.
