Mandolin Workshop with Mando Planet (Tim Connell & Jack Dwyer) Sunday March 23, 2014 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. St. George's Episcopal Church 1 West Ardmore Avenue Ardmore, PA 19003 Fee $40 www.timconnellmusic.com
"Mandolin Chord Shapes Workshop (with Q&A)"
Learn how to play any chord in any key with simple, repeating chord positions that improve your understanding of scales, keys, and harmonic movement. Learn how to move melodically through a key as you change from one chord to another. Learn simple and tasteful voicings for the more complex chords used in jazz and modern music.
This workshop is designed for players of all skill levels--yes beginners--you too. Detailed handouts will be provided for every topic covered. We guarantee that even advanced mandolinists will come away with something new, and beginners will have a solid roadmap for continuing their study of the mandolin, and music in general.
The workshop will conclude with a Q&A period where students can seek advice on specific issues and topics.
Mando Planet (Jack Dwyer & Tim Connell)
Portland, Oregon-based mandolinists Jack Dwyer and Tim Connell teach on the faculty of Lewis and Clark College and conduct team-taught workshops around the United States. The two have developed a simple and complete approach to improving technique on the mandolin, distilled from their teaching experience at workshops and festivals up and down the West Coast (Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival, The Mandolin Symposium, and others).
Prior to their collaboration on Mando Planet, the two studied with many great mandolinists including: Mike Marshall, David Grisman, Don Stiernberg, Hamilton de Holanda, Dudu Maia and others. Tim is classically trained, an American authority on Brazilian Choro music, and a skilled pianist and Irish whistle player. Jack grew up singing and playing all matter of stringed instruments in an Alaskan family bluegrass band before moving east as a teen to study jazz and classical music on scholarship, and perform and study with various New York-based musicians. In addition to their work with Mando Planet, Tim performs with his acoustic Brazilian duo Rio Con Brio, and Jack performs with the Scott Law Bluegrass Band.
Jack and Tim's workshops provide a look into the current school of mandolin playing in a manner that is both accessible and comprehensive.
