"Di Megileh of Itzik Manger"
This staged concert musical with English supertitles is based on the Book of Esther and "Songs of the Megileh" by celebrated Yiddish poet Itzik Manger, with music by Dov Seltzer.
Imagine a witty, romantic musical with book and lyrics by Itzik Manger, one of the 20th century's finest Yiddish poets, and a sparkling klezmer-inspired score by Dov Seltzer, one of Israel's most important composers. Catchy songs, palace intrigue, star-crossed lovers separated by fate, slapstick humor, political satireall of that, and more.
"Di Megileh" springs to vivid life in a whimsically staged concert production featuring the Bay Area's biggest names in Jewish music and theater, a full chorus, concert band and English supertitles. With one foot in 1930s Eastern Europe and the other in biblical Persia, "Di Megileh" recounts the Book of Esther from the eyes of Esther's jilted lover, Fastrigoseh the tailor. It's the story of Purim we never learned in Hebrew school!
Cast includes: Naomi Newman, Joan Mankin, Linda Hirschhorn, Heather Klein, Eliana Kissner, Joel Fleisher, Josiah Polhemus, Laura Sheppard, Gerry Tenney and Evelie Delfino Sales Posch.
Produced by the Yiddish Theater Collective under the fiscal sponsorship of KlezCalifornia, in collaboration with the 29th Jewish Music Festival.
