"BLANK" a new play by Bruce Reisman
"BLANK" is set during the Golden Age of Broadway and post-WWII, circa 1947.
Famous Broadway playwright/director LOGAN WELLMAN (played by stand-up comic and intensely talented actor JOEL BRYANT) has just been released from a mental hospital. Upon the day he returns to his estate in Long Ridge, CT, he is visited by young WWII war veteran and best-selling novelist, TOM HANNIGAN (played by KRIS BLACK, a true young Renaissance man -- actor, writer, painter, producer). Having worshiped Logan from afar, Tom entices his hero to help him adapt his novel into a new Broadway play.
Reluctant at first, but fearing his "breakdown" also diminished his talent, Wellman takes on the challenge; and together, the two embark on an arduous, intense, and often hilarious creative journey.
The audience members become "flies on the wall" as these two hard-headed geniuses, butt heads, become best friends, and eventually create a masterpiece called "Brenner's War" with the help of booze, drugs, and by revealing their own private demons.
Yes, "BLANK" is a dramatic "comedy". Neil Simon meets Arthur Miller, as it were!
The other characters are:
CHARLIE (played by HAWK D'ONOFRIO, an up and coming, charismatic young actor), the typist, who is their young sounding board, wildly entranced by his role as the "man in the middle".
NORA (played by "Days of Our Lives" soap alumnus, FARAH FATH. Blind since birth, Nora is Charlie's ultra-honest, no holes barred wife.. brought into the proceedings to "shake things up".
HOPE WELLMAN (played by DONNA W. SCOTT, a member of "Hollywood Royalty" and a fine and beautiful actress). She's Logan's ex-wife, who has remained his best friend, business manager, and loyal confident. At first, Hope is not sure Logan is "well enough" to write a new play, but concedes that he must if he is to fully recover.
ELIZA WELLMAN (played by KABBY BORDERS, a young, beautiful, and talented actress) is Logan's new, sexy, very young wife. At first glance, ditsy, she is nobody's fool, having seen the world by way of her high fashion modeling career.
"BLANK" was written by BRUCE REISMAN, who has had a 40 year career as a writer-producer-director in both stage and screen, having sold his first TV script at the age of 13. He also directs "BLANK", having done so with dozens theatrical productions, including 10 of his own original plays. He is best known as a producer-writer for such TV shows as "CHiPs", "The Fall Guy", "TJ Hooker", "Mike Hammer", "Tour of Duty", and "The Young Riders" for which his writing of "Requiem For a Hero" got him inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1991.
"BLANK" is inspired by his meeting and correspondence with the late, great JOSHUA LOGAN, who won the Pulitzer Prize for "South Pacific", directed the screen version and those of "Picnic", "Camelot", "Paint Your Wagon"; and especially, "Mr. Roberts" -- which, as "fictionalized" as "Brenner's War" -- is the core of "BLANK".
The author has taken dramatic license, and fictionalized these real life people, and turned them into fascinating, charismatic "composites" of legends he has met who were part of Broadway's Golden Age.
