Pearl Vodka in conjunction with That Uppity Theatre Company and Vital VOICE Magazine will present the third annual BRIEFS: A Festival of Short LGBT Plays. The festival is a unique venture in St. Louis that brings together numerous directors and theatrical artisans to showcase the work of eight different playwrights all under one roof. That roof is an unorthodox event venue known as La Perla in downtown St. Louis. The historic bank, and now one of the oldest buildings in St. Louis, is transformed into a beautiful theatrical experience. The event attracts the most diverse audiences and casts in the region.
This year's collection of plays have been selected from nearly 100 submissions from across the nation and include such themes as a relationship between a conservative and a liberal, domestic violence between same sex couples, a Victorian version of Grindr, lesbian dating issues, LGBT parenting and families and more. The aerial entertainment of Ricky Phoenix and Michelle Mynx of "Gravity Plays Favorites" will open the show.
This year, BRIEFS will feature another senior brunch on Sunday, as well as a Saturday matinee mixer.
BRIEFS presents mainstream theatrical work that addresses the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered people. BRIEFS is targeted to a diverse and mature audience that appreciates good theatre in unique settings. The eight plays each run about 10 minutes and include myriad comic and serious themes and genres.
During its short history, BRIEFS has attracted some of the most experienced directors throughout the Midwest, including Edward Coffield, Christopher Limber, Bonnie Black Taylor, Lee Ann Matthews, Ed Reggi, Marty Stanberry and Anna Pileggi. The festival also provides an excellent opportunity for younger directors and actors to gain valuable experience and exposure. We have one of the largest casts in town including Carrie Hegdahl, Meghan Maguire, Jeffrey Wright, John Wolbers, and Kirsten Wylder, who have worked with many companies.
Several of the plays that appeared at previous BRIEFS have gone on to numerous productions, including That Uppity Theatre Company's Joan Lipkin's "Are You Married?" which debuted at BRIEFS 2013 and has since been produced at six theaters. That play, directed by Lipkin, will be performed as a keynote for the National Healthcare Conference in Columbia this April.
"Vital VOICE Magazine always strives to create and deliver new and exciting projects and experiences for the LGBT community and our straight allies," said Vital VOICE CEO Darin Slyman. "BRIEFS is a celebration of our community that will leave audiences entertained, informed and uplifted."
According to Associate Producer Michael B. Perkins, who is also directing, "BRIEFS will inspire conversations during the event and long afterward, bringing a diverse audience together that wouldn't otherwise interact. We learn so much not only by doing, but by watching our peers," he concluded.
Other BRIEFS sponsors include Barefoot Wine and the Regional Arts Commission. For more information contact:
