Mosaic Dance Theater Company's Gala Cabaret Benefit
Mosaic Dance Theater Company presents its annual Gala Cabaret Benefit Performance of Middle Eastern Dance on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 5:00 PM at Cecil's Jazz Club, 364 Valley Road, West Orange, NJ 07052. All tickets are $25.00 plus $10.00 food & beverage minimum. Reservations are recommended.
Mosaic Dance Theater Company (MDTC), based in Glen Ridge, NJ, celebrates the dance, the music, the folktales, and the culture from the Mediterranean countries of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. "Song and Dance" is the theme of this year's gala, with the Mosaic company providing the "dance" portion of the evening. Led by internationally respected performer of Middle Eastern dance Samara, the company includes Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Nina Brewton, Nahoko Sugiyama, and Romy Zamora. Samara, MDTC's Choreographer and Artistic Director for Dance. was a protege of the late, celebrated master teacher and choreographer Ibrahim Farrah, an award-winning innovator in ethnic dance. As principal dancer in his renowned Near East Dance Group, Samara performed in some of America's most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Town Hall, The Triplex Theater, Theater of the Riverside Church, Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, The Warner Theater in Washington DC, and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC.
Supplying the "song" are special guest artists Gary Kupper and Vanessa Bellardini. The multi-talented Gary Kupper -- actor, singer, composer, lyricist, musician -- has performed the world over: with Chuck Berry in Rome, the Kremlin and St. Petersburg (Russia); Musical Director for The Drifters' international tour, for the Coasters in Beijing, and for the Platters in Las Vegas and Atlantic City; and as Chico Marx in the recent tour of "Groucho" with Gabe Kaplan. He is composer and lyricist for the musicals "Consumer Behavior" (NYC Fringe Festival); "Timmy the Great" (Tribeca Theater Festival); "Rubirosa, the World's Greatest Lover" (Playwrights Horizons). Audiences at Mosaic's "Song and Dance" will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Kupper perform his words and music. Actress/singer Vanessa Bellardini joins him on several of his songs, as well as several solos. A graduate of Montclair State University, Ms. Bellardini has performed on stage in NYC, as a jingle singer in national commercials, and is currently doing voiceovers as a principal character on a new cartoon series, "Casper's Scare School."
Mosaic Dance Theater Company, a NJ non-profit, public benefit corporation was founded in 2003 by Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, MDTC's Producing Artistic Director. The company evolved out of the dance and theater productions originally developed by Ms. Varricchio for New York Performing Artist Company (NYPACo). Touring since 1992, NYPACo productions have been presented in schools, universities, and at such venues as Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Museum, Paper Mill Playhouse, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the Nashville Institute for the Arts, and the NY International Fringe Festival. Samara, MDTC's Choreographer and Artistic Director for Dance, began her collaboration with Ms. Varricchio in 2000, and since MDTC's inception, the company has premiered several original full-length dance works, touring them to performing arts venues, universities and schools.
