Explorations of The Shadow World Film Festival
Join ShadowLight for an eclectic evening filled with enchanting music, exotic edibles, and exclusive films. Each night we'll spotlight two films from ShadowLight's latest DVD series providing a rare opportunity to revisit favorite past performances. ShadowLight has been sharing cross-cultural storytelling through the magic of Shadow Theatre for more than 30 years. For these very special happenings, musicians from the films will perform live. Delectable food and drink evoking the cultural spirit of the evening will also be featured at each screening.

SHADOW MASTER is an inside view of Balinese life which reveals the cultural context of theater, music, and dance on the island. Larry Reed created this dramatization of events which occurred spent living and studying with a dalang and his extended family. The actors in the film are all members of the family and co-creators of the story. June 30th, 8:15pm
HIGHLIGHTS (1994-2006) traces the evolution of ShadowLight Productions and Reed's own artistic journey: from his beginnings as a student of a famous Dalang (shadow master) in Bali, to his explorations in contemporary shadow theater in the United States. June 30th, 8:15pm
THE WILD PARTY explores the American artistic traditions of jazz, film noir, and poetry. Written in 1926, it is a witty risque poem about two vaudeville performers who fight, make up, throw a party and flirt with danger. Set in shadows with a live jazz band, and original compositions by Academy Award winner Bruce Forman. July 7th, 8:15pm
7 VISIONS is a story of Mission life in old California is written by award-winning playwright Octavio Solis, etc. The play celebrates the imagery of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. This richly musical tale is partly narrated through whimsical and wistful corridos performed by the trio Cascada de Flores. July 7th, 8:15pm
MAYADANAWA is a story of a horrible beast with long quivering fingers, which demands to be worshipped exclusively by the Balinese people. Mayadanawa leaps across the screen, roaring and wreaking havoc until the god Indra comes down in his chariot to battle the demon and restore peace and order to the land.
