Freud's Last Session

The Couch Trip Collective Production is proud to present the BC premiere production of FREUD'S LAST SESSION, by Mark St. Germain, at New Westminster's historic GALBRAITH HOUSE, January 29th to February 9th, 2014.

FREUD'S LAST SESSION won the Off-Broadway Association Award for Best Play of 2011, and enjoyed a 2-year New York run before spawning productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Toronto, London, Buenos Aires, Stockholm, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Madrid, and Sydney and now, in New Westminster.

Famed psychoanalyst Doctor Sigmund Freud is dying of cancer, having recently escaped to London from Nazi-controlled Austria. He summons the young novelist, essayist, and late convert to Christianity C.S. Lewis to his London home to discover why the brilliant intellectual and former atheist would "abandon the truth for a lie".

What begins as a philosophical debate becomes a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time. God, love, sex, morality, evil and the meaning of life are burning questions, especially on the day England enters the Second World War - and only two weeks before Freud will end his own life.

Despite their clash of beliefs, the imminent threat of war leads the men to startling revelations about themselves, and to their common ground. Inspired by the bestselling book "The Question of God" by Harvard's Doctor Armand M. Nicholi, Jr., Mark St. Germain's brilliant script sparkles with wit, surprising humour, and poignant insights into these great influential minds. Does God exist? Does goodness require the presence of evil? Can morality guarantee our survival on the eve of destruction?

The Couch Trip Collective/City Stage New West exclusive engagement of FREUD'S LAST SESSION has a limited run and MUST CLOSE FEBRUARY 9TH. The show stars veteran theatre actors RICHARD NEWMAN as Dr. Sigmund Freud, and DAMON CALDERWOOD as British author C.S. Lewis, with direction by Chris Robson (MFA UBC).
