Event
Carmel Clay Historical Society Spring Tea
An event hosted by the Carmel Clay Historical Society in partnership with The Barrington of Carmel. A light luncheon with treats will be served along with tea and coffee.
Guest speaker Dr. Anita Morgan is a senior lecturer in the Department of History at IUPUI and is a past president of the Indiana Association of Historians. Her presentation will be based on her book, We Must be Fearless: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Indiana.
Morgan's book begins with the 1851 Indiana Womans Rights convention in Dublin, Indiana, and follows the ups and downs of the suffrage fight, including the formation of the Womans Franchise League in 1911, the efforts of the Legislative Council to obtain the vote, womens support for World War I, the story of the 1917 partial suffrage law and subsequent court battle, and the final passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. The book includes new information on subjects that have been underrepresented in the past: the attitudes of Hoosiers of German descent toward suffrage, the role of African American women, and those women who worked against suffrage.
Carmel Clay Historical Society will be showcasing important women in Carmel's history, as well as a women's history exhibit created by the National Archives. Cost per person is $25.00.
