"Vengo"
Drawing on her everyday experiences for candid subject matter,
Rosario Toledo is an artist who regularly seeks out collaborators from art forms
beyond flamenco working frequently with musicians, actors, theater directors,
and dancers from other forms and traditions. Ms. Toledo's approach employs the
subversion of gender roles, composition of phrase work through theatrical drama
and improvisations, and humor as a versatile way to uncover inner dialogues.
She will present "Vengo" during the Festival, a 2012 piece she created to perform
in the streets in her hometown of Cádiz. "Vengo" begins with her taking the train
back home from Sevilla. On the "train" (represented by a few chairs in rows and
sound effects), she answers her "phone"her flamenco shoeexemplifying
her humor. Her work encompasses mime, as she exaggerates postures, pulls
faces, shimmies her shoulders and in perfect "compass" (rhythmic units), adds
contemporary dance vocabulary to her movements switching in and out of the
flamenco idiom.
