NAACP PORTLAND BRANCH Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast Celebration
A CALL TO CONSCIENCE:
CIVIL RIGHTS AND THE QUEST FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE
Featuring a Keynote Address by Former Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen

Dr. King devoted his life to reconciling the contradiction between our nation's stated principles of equality and justice with the structural racism and poverty that has plagued our society since its founding.  He described this conflict in numerous speeches but most notably after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in a lecture entitled, "The Quest for Peace and Justice."

The Honorable William S. Cohen, who not only served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense under President Bill Clinton but also served in the U.S. Congress representing Maine for 24 years, will examine the current realities of this conflict.  We will also take time to mark several 50th anniversaries taking place in 2014.  Anniversaries include Dr. King's Nobel Peace Prize, the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act, the continual operation of the NAACP Portland branch, and Dr. King's visit to Maine when he spoke in Biddeford at St. Francis College now known as the University of New England.

In addition, with the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader and world symbol for the cause of human rights and freedom, the NAACP will take a moment to honor his life and legacy.  A community leadership award will be bestowed to the person and/or institution that best reflects his spirit and that of Dr. King's in the building of the beloved community and equal opportunity to all.

A separate program for children ages 1 - 12 is offered at the Children's Museum and Theater of Maine in Portland during the breakfast event.

Please call 207-553-5851 with any questions.

Congratulate the Portland branch on its 50th anniversary!  There is still time to place a commemorative ad in the printed breakfast program booklet.  Email us at rtalbotross@gmail.com for more information and pricing.

Hope to see you there!
