On Feb. 15 and 16, 2014, City Arts presents Genre Bender for two shows only at the Cornish Playhouse. Genre Bender commissions five pairs of artists to create new multidisciplinary works, fusing a diverse range of styles and influences into an unforgettable performance. The weekend's events will also feature a Saturday night afterparty for artists and audiences to dance, drink and celebrate together.
Doors at 7 p.m. Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday. 21+. No-host bars are available pre-show, at intermission and during Saturday's after-party.
Genre Bender debuted as part of City Arts Fest in 2011 combining a poet and chocolate maker, a cellist and lighting designer, a dancer and filmmaker, among others but will now be produced as a stand-alone event twice a year. Curated by City Arts editorial staff and Genre Bender creative director Jennifer Zeyl, the event celebrates innovation and cross-pollination in Seattle's thriving arts community. The February performances will showcase collaborations from the following pairings:
Marya Sea Kaminski + Mark Mitchell
Kaminski is a writer, director, actor and solo performer known for delivering powerhouse performances in iconic roles at Seattle's leading theatres. Mitchell is a fashion and costume designer whose recent exhibition at the Frye Art Museum, Burial, attracted record-breaking crowds for a look at his ethereal couture for the dead.
Ahamefule Oluo + ilvs strauss
Oluo is a musician, comedian and storyteller who plays trumpet in the post-jazz band Industrial Revelation, whose 2013 album Oak Head was released to major acclaim. As part of Town Hall's artist residency program, he premiered his mixed-media performance Now I'm Fine in December 2012. strauss, a writer, musician and performer, creates wild original stories to accompany slideshows built from found images and has performed widely throughout the Northwest.
Kaylee Cole + Jessica Jobaris
Cole is a singer and songwriter whose confessional, sardonic compositions recall piano-playing raconteurs like Burt Bacharach and Nora Jones. She spent much of 2013 recording in Los Angeles with producer David Sitek of TV on the Radio; those songs will be released as an album in mid-2014. Dancer and choreographer Jobaris has performed internationally with a host of acclaimed companies including Lingo dance theatre, Maureen Whiting Co. and Salt Horse. She frequently works in dance cinema and is known for her experimental choreography.
Trent Moorman + Lusine
Moorman is the hardest-working drummer in Seattle, playing a custom combination of standard and electronic drum kits. He's a member of the bands Fresh Espresso and Head Like a Kite and regularly performs with Don't Talk to the Cops, Katie Kate, OC Notes, Vox Mod and others. Lusine, aka Jeff McIlwain, is a veteran electronic music producer who plays at dance clubs around the world. His album The Waiting Room was released in early 2013 by vaunted Ann Arbor-based record label Ghostly International.
Ezra Dickinson + Shaun Scott
Known for his innovative choreography, Dickinson stunned audiences last spring with his site-specific solo performance, Mother for you I made this, a multimedia tribute that unfolded on the streets of downtown Seattle. Scott, a writer and filmmaker, creates sweeping meditations in both documentary and narrative formats and is currently completing post-production on his fourth feature, Pacific Aggression.
