Kids spend only about 20 percent of their waking hours in school. If we're ever going to close the achievement gap and prepare kids for the complexities of the world they face, we've got to enrich the other 80 percent with more learning and inspiration. That's what parents do when they pay for their kids' music lessons, sports and cultural experiences. For hundreds of thousands of New York City kids, these are unattainable luxuries.
