How to Survive the Apocaplyse
After getting kicked off a beach for trying to burn an effigy, a small crew of freaks builds a visionary city in the desert. Three newbies arrive, each with their own baggage of fears and expectations, and make their way through the erotic, psychological, and apocalyptic minefield of the temporary festival. Then the world changes in the blink of an eye.
"How to Survive the Apocalypse" is a Burning Man-inspired theatrical event that combines rock opera, vaudeville, and a pagan medicine show thats just as inspired and terrified by current events as you are. Designed to bring a blast of the playa into new settings, the evening aims to give audiences a taste of the Burning Man experience and its madcap celebration of community, personal expression, and no-holds-barred excess, while exploring the inherent conflicts and painful paradoxes of the event itself, from its tangled origins to its ongoing evolution..
Part mutant mystery play, part crash-course in proactive future culture, "How to Survive the Apocalypse" combines rants and variety-show acts with preview scenes and songs from the Burning Opera, a ferociously inventive rock musical scored by Mark Nichols, with libretto by counterculture writer Erik Davis. How to Survive the Apocalypse is a work in progress. This weekends version is designed for black-box theaters and rock venues, but our master plan is to create a large-scale Roadshow: a traveling performance event that will take the message of radical self-expression on the road, exposing audiences to a mobile Black Rock City while introducing them to the green tech and community-based culture that increasingly define the events influence on the larger culture. Because of the limited run and the small number of seats at Stage Werx, we fully expect this show to sell out early. All proceeds for the event will be donated to Intersection for the Arts.
