The Art is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a two-act event on November 12, 2013.
Act I: From Nickel to Pixel (6:00 PM) will feature the premiere of the new short documentary The Art Lives, produced by Luke Boyce of CU's Emmy-award winning Shatterglass Studios. It will also feature a panel with the authors of the new book The Art Theater: Playing Movies for 100 Years: Perry C. Morris, Joseph Muskin, Audrey Wells. Snacks and drinks will be available.
Act II: Time Trip with the Andrew Alden Ensemble (8:00 PM) is the performance of a specially-commissioned work by the Andrew Alden Ensemble, a Boston-based chamber music group that composes & performs original scores to silent films. They will play a program of silent shorts ranging from cinema's earliest days in 1896 all the way into more experimental works from the 1960s, and featuring Buster Keaton, Alice in Wonderland, and some classic old movie ads!
As an encore event, the Andrew Alden Ensemble will play their score to Carl Dreyer's vampire horror film Vampyr on Wednesday, November 13 at 8:30 PM. The Andrew Alden Ensemble last visited the Art in spring of 2013, where they played their score to Nosferatu to a sold-out audience.
Tickets will soon be available for purchase.
The last of the original movie theaters in central Illinois, the Art has gone through many different identities. Most recently, in September 2012, the Art became a co-op as more than 1,300 patrons bought into the business to help finance its transition into the digital age.
