34th Annual Seattle International Comedy Competition Opening Night at Columbia City Theater
The Seattle International Comedy Competition is excited to return to the beautiful and historic Columbia City Theater for the first time since 2009 for an opening night "gala." The comedians performing come from not only the Seattle area but from across the US and truly internationally - Canada, Australia, UK, Slovenia, and even Portlandia.
"Within weeks of winning the 2012 Seattle Comedy Competition, I met with every network there is besides PBS and the Lifetime Channel. Everyone from network CEO's to casting directors. I got to pitch a sitcom pilot to Comedy Central. "
That's comedian Michael Malone, talking on the phone from his hotel room in Houston Texas, where he is headlining the JokeJoint Comedy Showcase, a new iteration of one of Houston's heritage comedy clubs.
"800 comedians entered the contest, you had to submit video and all that stuff, and they whittled it down to 33, and I was honored just to be a part of that 33. Then it tiers down to 10. Then it tiers down to a top five, and then you have a winner. Every time it tiered down, I was just honored to be a part of it."
This year's winner will have an even greater challenge, as the 2013 Seattle International Comedy Competition has received over 1200 submissions.
It all starts on Wednesday, November 6 2013 with an Opening Night Gala at the historic Columbia City Theater in Seattle, where 17 of the 34 chosen participants begin their run toward the championship. After 23 shows in 26 days in 19 venues around Western Washington, the winner will take the crown from the 26-year-old Malone, who will be making a guest appearance on the final night, Sunday December 1 at Seattle's Comedy Underground.
For 5 or so years, NBC had a TV show called "Last Comic Standing" where contestants were thrown challenges like making Playboy Playmates laugh in a hot tub. Fun, maybe. Career benefit? Zilch. The finalists of the Seattle International Comedy Competition will have performed a minimum of 17 shows, been judged by 61 different judges, and received 427 separate scores. All while fully dressed. No wonder Hollywood seeks them out.
This is the REAL "Last Comic Standing."
