LITTLE ROBERT
The second show in ART/WNY's 2013-14 season features Artie Award winning writer, Mark Humphrey's compelling story on the legendary, and mysterious, blues singer, Robert Johnson entitled LITTLE ROBERT. Slated for November, this original work will be directed by Gail Golden, who's directorial eye was evident in ART/WNY's MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS.
Playwright Mark Humphrey has woven a tale of the final moments of Robert Johnson and a particular stranger by the name of Woodrow (played by Robert Ernie Insana) who is coming to collect on a contract. With the deal in place and the card game underway, Johnson (played by Hugh Davis) looks to find a compromise with Woodrow to find a way to live on in heart and soul.
Humphrey spoke about the the inspiration behind LITTLE ROBERT "Came from several places, as most writing projects do. The major ones are a conversation I had with Guy Wagner about the devil being angry about buying Robert Johnson's soul and not getting it, and my interest in American myths." Humphrey fascination with language has also translated into the piece. "When writing this piece, or any period piece for that matter, I like to go to my book shelves and read about the time I'm working on. And the jargon of the day, the sayings, the slang, all hold a fascination for me."
Humphrey wants patrons seeing LITTLE ROBERT "...to be entertained and maybe want to look into the work of the musicians that laid the foundations of what's out there now. I would like them to want to come to more shows, because they realize that theater is still a valid option for a night out."
