Lecture/Demonstration - International Body Music Festival
What is Body Music? Before people were hollowing logs and striking rocks, they were using their bodies to stomp, clap, sing, snap and grunt their musical ideas. International artists come together here to demonstrate and discuss traditional and contemporary performance of their artform. Each group will demonstrate some of their work, and take questions from the audience. Barbatuques is an exciting 12 member Body Music ensemble that moves the rich musical traditions of Brazil through their "circle orchestra." Touring throughout Brazil and Europe since 1996, this appearance is a part of their US debut. KeKea, a duo, explores the rhythms and odd-time signatures of Turkish music to create the sublime. Celina Kalluk and Lucie Idlout perform traditional Inuit throat singing, using each others mouths as resonators to produce guttural vocal sounds through voice manipulation and breathing techniques. This evening's event is co-sponsored by the Oakland Museum of California and hosted by Crosspulse Artistic Director Keith Terry.
