Emerging Artists Showcase - Joe Jencks & Gathering Time
At this Emerging Artists Showcase, we will present two hot upcoming artists to our Long Island audience. They are:

JOE JENCKS - tenor sweetness with great strength

Joe Jencks is an international touring performer, songwriter, entertainer, and educator. From concert halls like the Lincoln Center in New York, to coffee houses, festivals, spiritual communities and schools, Joe Jencks has spent the last seven years touring full time. His music has traveled to every continent. He has earned respect for his unique merging of musical beauty, social consciousness, and spiritual exploration. Joe weaves a diverse web of stories with brilliant musical skill, ensnaring even the most rigid of hearts, inviting them to open. He has enthralled audiences of all ages with songs that touch the human spirit, lend courage and hope, and invite us to fully live inside of our passions and our beliefs.

Joe has earned wide recognition for his songs about working people, and for his unique merging of musical beauty, social consciousness, and spiritual exploration.  Joe weaves a diverse web of stories with brilliant musical skill, ensnaring even the most rigid of hearts, inviting them to open.  Whether performing at a union conference or folk festival, or at an intimate club or house concert, Joe manages to make any audience feel welcomed, valued, and part of a community.

Ron Olesko from WFDU-FM says that "Joe Jencks is the type of musician that will cause you to drop that morning newspaper or pull your car to the side of the road when you hear his songs. He is the type of artist that will turn heads in his direction when he walks onto a stage. His voice will instantly draw you into his passionate songs. He is the type of musician whose music will become a part of you."

Like a good craftsman, Joe applies the skills of his well-rounded conservatory training to a contemporary genre, and offers the listener the best of both worlds. Drawing on his Irish heritage in the process, Joe uses his lush and lyrical voice to enchant, heal, and inspire to action. Joe has won numerous songwriting awards for his original work, and is also highly regarded as a song interpreter. "He has a remarkable tenor voice thats capable of great strength and sweetness in the same moment, much as was Phil Ochs voice. His guitar is always a dead-on accompaniment to his songs intentions." Bill Fischer, Victory Music Review

On Joe's latest release, The Candle And The Flame, his 6th CD, Joe's vocal performances are unparalleled, and a Grammy winning team of engineers and supporting musicians contribute to make the recording an exceptional piece of work from start to finish. Guests include: Jon Carroll (Mary Chapin Carpenters pianist) on keyboards, Pat Wictor on slide guitars and Siobhan Quinn on backing vocals. Jim Robeson (recording engineer) and Charlie Pilzer (mixing and mastering engineer) also play bass on the record. The Candle And The Flame combines the many facets of Joes diverse musical background and weaves them all together into an aural tapestry that is stark and exquisite. Joe sings with the passion of an R&B/Gospel singer, the knowledge of a classical vocalist, the soul of an Irish Tenor, and the conscience of a troubadour ... and at the center of Joes music is an abiding love for all humanity, a love that transcends the everyday and borders on the mystical.

Joe is a dual US/Irish citizen living in the US, and merges traditions from both countries in his eclectic and vibrant musical presentation. Joe has had the unique pleasure of sharing the stage with numerous folk artists including Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, Holly Near, John McCutcheon, Pat Humphries, and Bill Staines.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear this exciting performer here on our stage for a rare appearance on Long Island.

GATHERING TIME - tight ear-pleasing harmonies

Gathering Time is a new acoustic vocal trio with strong hints of CSN and Peter Paul & Mary, consisting of members Glen Roethel, Stuart Markus and Hillary Foxsong  three emerging talents on the acoustic music scene. Their first recording together, a lively cover of Peter Yarrow's holiday classic, Light One Candle  just released in December 2007  within one week made rotation on numerous folk radio stations from New York to Israel.

Glen Roethel's credits (guitar, vocals, bass) include more than 100 copyrights, scores of co-writes and production on 15+ records (including 2 self-produced, indy, full-length CDs), national syndicated airplay, radio play spanning the globe and background music for TV. His live shows delight audiences with acoustic guitar wizardry, vocal proficiency and soothing melodic tones. A songwriter contest finalist for the Susquehanna Music & Arts Festival in 2007, Glen also saw his song Namaste' (from his debut CD, From Beginning to End) featured in a Presidential Museum exhibit in Texas and a new song, "People of the Earth" published in a New Thought songbook for The Association of Unity Churches International this very same year. Release of his second CD, Smaller Things, is imminent.

Stuart Markus (guitar, vocals, bass) is a journalist, musician, songwriter, community organizer and so much more. Known as the creator of LI's official Groundhog's Day theme song, Stuart has also organized several noted songwriter concerts including the Malverne Songwriter Festival in 1998, the Thanksgiving Benefit Concert that marked the debut of Huntington's Song Box in 1999, and a benefit to rebuild the Broadway Beanery, a well-known coffee house and music venue that was destroyed by fire in 2001. He is also the organizer of Wild About Harry: The Harry Chapin Tribute Concert since 2004.

He's an avid singer of sea chantys and one half of the traditional maritime music duo Strike the Bell, but Stuart has also shared the stage with Tom Paxton, Oscar Brand, Christine Lavin, Dan Bern, David Buskin, Dar Williams, Ashford & Simpson, David Johansen, and John Hall of the band Orleans. His 1996 CD release, Not the Only One Who Feels This Way, has enjoyed college and commercial radio play across the eastern U.S. and his second CD, The View from the Side of the Road, continues to command college and folk radio support.

Hillary Foxsong - (vocals) grew up in a musical household. "When we sang along with the radio in my house, we sang harmonies. You always had to find your own part and fit in with everyone else." Those early lessons polished her a fine 'ear' and a musical sense that stood her in good stead through years of school and church choirs, and even a long infatuation with karaoke bars.

Hillary met Glen in 2005 at an Oyster Bay street festival where he immediately recognized her vocal talent and invited her to join him at the mic. She hasn't stopped singing since, and she even began writing songs in 2005 at Glen's urging ; now she's already amazing audiences with her lush, vivid lyrical poetry and pleasing melodies.
