Young people today face a 24/7 barrage of powerful and persuasive digital messages, and a dizzying array of technologies that enable them to create and distribute their own messages almost instantaneously. The creative opportunities are tremendous and so is the need for media literacy skills.
The Boston International Kids Film Festival is a new initiative that aims to expose children in a variety of developmental stages, and their caregivers, to thought-provoking films from around the world that are by, for or about children, and to offer workshops that show kids how to use the media so it doesn't use them.
It launches November 1-3, 2013 at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. FILMS begin Friday night, run all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon. Workshops take place on the Tufts University campus from 11-2 on Saturday, and at the Somerville Theatre on Sunday afternoon.
The BIKFF is produced and presented by Filmmakers Collaborative, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that has been serving the independent media community for over 25 years. It is being run in association with Tufts University's Communication & Media Studies Program.
