Diary of a Madman
Sept. 12--St. LouisUpstream Theater, recently named "Best Theatre Company" in Alive Magazine's 2013 Hot List, is excited to have acquired rights for the St. Louis premiere of Nicolai Gogol's Diary of a Madman, in the internationally acclaimed adaptation by David Holman, with Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush. Runs Oct 4-20. Christopher Harris (last seen as Yank in The Hairy Ape) plays a Russian civil servant whose struggle to rise above the mindless routine brings him to the brink of delusionand beyond. He is joined by Magan Wiles who has returned to St. Louis to play several roles in this fantastically comic production. With live music by Joe Dreyer. Directed by Philip Boehm. Stage design by Michael Heil, costumes by Katie Donovan, lighting by Steve Carmichael and props by Claudia Mink Horn.
This adaptation of Diary of a Madman premiered in Sydney in 1989 and has been lauded by critics from Botany Bay to Brooklyn: "theatrically and emotionally loaded with everything that might be on your wish list for a great night out: laughter, tears and a lot to mull over later...
