Winkie Con 2014 - 50th Annual WIZARD OF OZ Convention
There are multiple ways to register for WINKIE CON 50! Our "deluxe" FULL 3-Day Registrations are now SOLD OUT. But we are now offering 3-Day "Daytime" passes as well as Single-Day "daytime passes. Please note that the "daytime" passes DO NOT include the evening programs!
This year's Winkie Con not only marks our first half-century, but also our first convention in San Diego - a city with many connections to L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz. Baum spent winters at the Hotel Del Coronado and then rented a house in Coronado where he wrote the fifth Oz book, The Road to Oz. The coast of La Jolla was a starting point in several of Baum's fantasies, including The Scarecrow of Oz. We'll be exploring these San Diego connections to Oz and more at Winkie Con 50.
The Tik-Tok Man of Oz was first staged in Los Angeles, California, in 1913, and successfully toured the USA. This stage musical, with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum, was the basis for L. Frank Baum's 1914 Oz book Tik-Tok of Oz. Winkie Con 50 will stage The Tik-Tok Man of Oz with all the surviving music in a slightly abridged version of Baum's original script. We'll welcome Edward Einhorn, author of the critically-acclaimed modern Oz novels, Paradox in Oz and The Living House of Oz, to his first Winkie Con. Edward is a playwright, stage director, and children's author based in New York City,
It's also the 75th Anniversary of the MGM Film The Wizard of Oz. Some of our special guest include Caren Marsh-Doll who was Judy Garland's stand-in for the 1939 MGM motion picture The Wizard of Oz and a dancer and actor in many other movies of Hollywood's golden age of the 1930s and '40s. Caren will share her amazing life experiences with Winkie Con attendees.
We'll also welcome Aljean Harmetz, author of the landmark book <The Making of The Wizard of Oz.
On Saturday night you can see >b>The Tik-Tok Man of Oz, a stage musical written by L. Frank Baum that was first staged in Los Angeles in 1913, and successfully toured the USA. This stage musical, with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum, was the basis for L. Frank Baum's 1914 Oz book Tik-Tok of Oz.
Winkie Con 50 will feature our traditional Winkie Con activities: Oz quizzes for all ages and levels, the Oz Treasure Hunt, the Oz Research Table and Art Show, Oz Show and Tell to share your rare and wonderful Oz discoveries, panel discussions, displays, and super after-parties.
We are also developing plans for a writing workshop focusing primarily on writing fantasy for children. More detailed plans will be posted in the coming weeks.
Finally, we have several "add-on" options such as our Saturday evening Awards Banquet, a sumptuous Brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado on Sunday morning, and an exciting kayak tour of the La Jolla Sea Caves - used as a setting by Baum in several of children's books.
Welcome to the Wonderful Weekend of Oz!
