Amy Tan, Now at Alverno College's Wehr Hall
The Valley of Amazement, Amy Tan's first novel since Saving Fish From Drowning, spans generations and locales, accompanied by the sort of exotic detail that color the rich tapestries of all her works. Moving from the inner sanctums of courtesans in Shanghai to remote mountain villages; from the bustle of turn-of-the-century San Francisco to the wealthy Hudson Valley, two women seek the roots of their split identities throughout China's early 20th century upheaval: an imperial dynasty's end, the rise of industry, and the shock of WWII. As in all her novels, Tan explores contradictions of East and West, tradition and progress, and past and present with a vivid, evocative pen.
Tickets to this event will include a signed hardcover copy of The Valley of Amazement.*
In addition to Amy Tan's much-loved novels, which include The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, and The Bonesetter's Daughter, she is also author of the memoir The Opposite of Fate, and two children's books, one of which has now been adapted as a PBS production. Tan was also a co-producer and co-screenwriter of the film version of The Joy Luck Club. Her essays and stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and translated into thirty-five languages. She lives with her husband in San Francisco and New York.
This event is co-sponsored by OCA-Wisconsin.
