Garden City Grooves Day 2
On Saturday September 28th, GCG continues with an all BC night of soul, samba and afrobeat at Lucky Bar, featuring Miami Device, The Chantrelles and Masala (Victoria).
Miami Device is an 11 piece afrobeat/funk band based in Vancouver and includes members of Five Alarm Funk and Rude City Riot. Since their inception in 2007 the band has grown from a small four-piece funk experiment into the deep grooving, Fela Kuti inspired, juggernaut that exists today. With heavy driven horns atop syncopated guitars and layered percussion they produce a dance inducing, highly energetic live show. Their GCG performance will be their Victoria debut.
Victoria's soul sensations, The Chantrelles will showcase their original take on late 50s and 60s r&b, soul and doo-wop. The Chantrelles are far from a nostalgia act, however. Their original tunes are so well written and creative that they revitalize rather than just recall their influences. The Chantrelles will be performing tunes from their highly anticipated forthcoming full-length LP.
The music of Masala is inspired by traditional rhythms from West Africa, Haiti, Cuba, Brazil, and the Middle East. Masala's goal is to use music to bring people together in celebration of community and common cultural values. Audience interaction and participation have become essential aspects of a Masala performance. The recent addition of an experienced horn section has brought the band to the next level in groove-based dance music.
