Kmi Contemporary Dance Projects presents: Stages September 18th-21st, 8pm Winchester Street Theatre, 80 Winchester St., Toronto Gala performance/reception September 18th, tickets $40 September 19th-21st, tickets $15/$20
Stages is a dance production featuring two passionate new choreographic works by Kmi's Artistic Director Jennifer Dallas and the renowned Tedd Robinson. Time Now is a trio by Dallas for dancers Joanie Audet, Ana Claudette Groppler and Emma Kerson, music by Elizabeth Shepherd. Thirst is a duet by Tedd Robinson for Michael Caldwell and Jennifer Dallas, music by Charles Quevillon.
Kmi's Artistic Director Jennifer Dallas draws inspiration for her work from the writhing, sprawling cities Lagos, Cotonou, Ouagadougou, Accra, Tel Aviv and Toronto that are flooded every year with new arrivals from the countryside. In 2012 Dallas spent considerable choreographic and philosophic research time in Burkina Faso and Israel, surfacing with the seeds for her new work Time Now.
Time Now emerged from Dallas' studies of women's place in social structures, empowerment, unity, silhouette, sexuality and language during her residencies in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and Jerusalem, Israel. Time Now is a relationship danced by three female dancers, revealing curiosity and power. Time Now is set to an original score by three-time Canadian Juno nominee Elizabeth Shepherd.
"An increasingly virtual culture has altered our understanding of ourselves, our bodies, our relationships and our responsibilities. Dance helps to remind, reflect and reconnect audiences as well artists by engaging the shared vessel of the human body. The dance studio/stage is where human interaction can enjoy the beauty and freedom of transcending age, race and experience." Jennifer Dallas
Thirst brings together seasoned choreographer Tedd Robinson, dance artists Michael Caldwell and Jennifer Dallas, and musician Charles Quevillon. Robinson works are challenging for the performer and inviting to the audience. His dances reveal truths of humanity though his candour and humour.
"I am not in the habit of writing about new work as I like to sit with it after a performance to see what it has become, without the audience, the work is not complete. Just as we do not taste fully a meal until it is ready, a work is not ready until it is performed. That said, Thirst is a work that flowed out of us naturally, with the weight of a desert dune. I am looking forward to the first taste of Thirst." Tedd Robinson
