Latinos Beyond Reel - SF Latino Film Festival 2013
Director(s): Miguel Picker, Chyng Sun Country: USA Year: 2013 Running Time: 75 Language: English Genre: Documentary
Description: A documentary about how Latinos are marginalized and vilified in the U.S. mediawith grave consequences.
One in six adults and one in four children in the US are Latinos, but their reality is rarely depicted in the mainstream media. Interviews of scholars, actors, filmmakers, and Latino children reveal a striking pattern: in both news and entertainment, Latinos are overwhelmingly represented in narrow and negative ways, as people who are a drain on, and a threat to, society. Most disturbingly, children's games and cartoons contain violence against Latinos. This film documents the history, evolution, and meanings of these images, and how they deeply and harmfully affect Latinos, and the nation as a whole.
