10th New York Turkish Film Festival - Closing Party & Concert
We celebrate our 10th year with a performance by the internationally acclaimed musician Erkan Our and friends. Please join us for a night of Anatolian folk music. The repertoire will be focused on Erkan Ogur and smail Hakk Demircioglus previously released albums Anadolu Besik (Anatolia the Cradle, 2000) and Gln Kokusu Vard (Rose Had Fragrance, 1998) as well as newly added pieces that the duo has been playing in live performances. These folk songs reflect the timeless spiritual poetry of troubadours and minstrels of Anatolia, and cover a time period beginning from the 14th century onward. Mehmet Ali Sanlkol (vocals, ud, Turkish Lute, and ddk), Robert Labaree (vocals and ceng); Cem Mutlu (vocals and percussion), and Engin Gnaydn (vocals and percussion), all virtuoso performers with DUNYA Ensemble, will accompany the duo with authentic Anatolian instruments.

Erkan Ogur (Vocals and Kopuz) Erkan Ogur is an internationally acclaimed singer and multi-instrumentalist whose scope of musicianship has fascinated audiences across the globe for several decades. He was introduced to Anatolian music at the age of five, teaching himself to play violin, saz (Turkish lute) and cmb (a small fretless lute similar to banjo). In 1976 he made his first fretless guitar, which enabled him to play the Turkish scale. Over the years, Ogur performed with numerous leading Turkish musicians such as Mazhar Fuat Ozkan and Bulent Ortacgil, giving his unique and unmistakable sound to such unforgettable tracks such as Gullerin cinden and Bir Omurluk Misafir. He is well known, not only with his performance on fretless, e-bow, classical and electric guitar, but also on several authentic Turkish stringed instruments. The score he composed for Eskiya (The Bandit, 1996) received wide international attention. His latest work features Ogur on kopuz (a Turkish long-necked lute) in folk music collaborations with smail Hakk Demircioglu.
smail Hakk Demircioglu (Vocals and Divan Lute) smail Hakk Demircioglu was born in 1957 in Pazar, Rize on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Having completed his studies in 1984 at the National Turkish Music Conservatory at the Istanbul Technical University, Demircioglu plays a variety of instruments ranging from saz, balama (long-necked lute) to bass guitar. He was the head bass guitarist for the Ruhi Ayangil Turkish Music Orchestra and the Ruhi Su Chorus, led by the well-known folk musician Ruhi Su. Demirciolu has collaborated with Erkan Ogur since 1988, and released a solo album named Nasip Olsa in 2004.
DUNYA Ensemble DUNYA (the Turkish, Arabic, Persian and Greek word for "world") is a Turkish and world music ensemble based in Boston. Its goal is to present a contemporary view of a wide range of Turkish traditions, alone and in interaction with other world traditions, through performance, recording, publication and other educational activities. Many DUNYA programs involve collaborations which cross boundaries of style and tradition as the group believes that the many forms and colors of Turkish music become more vivid when carefully positioned next to other genres such as Western classical music or jazz, religious music from many regions and creeds or popular music. DUNYA has recently released Music of Cyprus, the first album in which Greek and Turkish Cypriots perform and present their musical traditions together.
