10th New York Turkish Film Festival - ARA
CONTEMPORARY TURKISH CINEMA
SYNOPSIS Recipient of the Special Prize of the Jury in the International Istanbul Film Festival for "strikingly tackling subjects that are still considered taboo in today's society within the context of interpersonal relationships by delving deep into its characters' personalities through masterful dialogues," Ara is the story of a small group of people who manage to "live well," but cannot help getting lost in a spiritual vacuum. These people are stuck between their past and stormy relationships, between Istanbul and the "homes" they cannot get back to, between their innermost secrets and the lies they tell, and between east and westthey are stuck in the "space between." The whole action in the film takes place in an almost empty apartment which belongs to one of the characters except for one exterior shot. Various other visuals from commercials and TV series that have been shot in the same apartment sneak into the film forming the intervals of a ten-year span.
