10th New York Turkish Film Festival - Akamas
WITHOUT BORDERS
SYNOPSIS Akamas became the center of a controversy in 2006 when Panicos Chrysanthou, defending his freedom of speech, refused a government request to cut a scene in the movie which, to them, misrepresented the contentious conflict between Cyprus and Great Britain and gave the impression that the director adopted Turkish and British positions. The film tells the story of Omeris, a Turkish Cypriot boy, who grows up with Greek Cypriots during the innocent years of his homeland. He has been taught that human beings are not much different from each other, even though they call themselves Greek or Turk, Muslim or Christian. When he falls in love with a Greek Cypriot girl, he realizes that the world is not as he expected, and the game of love is often painful. Later, he discovers that what is natural for the rest of the worldto be together with the person one loves turns out to be an adventure for him. The resilience of Omeris love is tested by the political turmoil and ethnic conflict in Cyprus as he lives through the formative events of the 1950s and 1970s in the country. Cypriot uprising against British colonial rule, sparing between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and Turkish intervention into the country in 1974 all shape Omeris understanding of human relationships and threaten to pull him apart from his love. He has to fight against the absurdity of fanaticism that invades his personal life.
