SYNOPSIS Having made its world premiere in Competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival where it also won the Best Screenplay Award, Yaşamın Kıyısında (The Edge of Heaven) tells the story of Turkish and German characters who discover their own identities by travelling between the two countries. The story starts when Ali, a retired widower and a Turkish immigrant in Germany, offers Turkey-born prostitute Yeter a monthly stipend on the condition that she accepts to live with him. Ali's son Nejat, although disapproving his father's decision, does not take long to grow fond of Yeter when he finds out that she sends most of her money to Turkey to pay for her daughter's university education. After the tragic death of Yeter, Nejat travels to Turkey and starts searching for Yeter's daughter Ayten. However, having fled the Turkish police for being a political activist, Ayten is already in Germany and searching for her mother. She immediately is befriended by German student Lotte. After Ayten gets arrested and is deported to Turkey, Lotte decides to abandon everything to help Ayten and follows her to Turkey where the fragile lives of all the protagonists end up unified.
FROM THE PRESS
Mr. Akın has created another film of similar geography but with a very different emotional landscape. It is a movie as much about bridging the gap between generationsfather and son, mother and daughteras between nations and cultures. He has had success with this latest film, for which he was writer, director and a producer, despite enormous expectations at home after Head-On, not the least of which were his own. The film has stood up to scrutiny. The Edge of Heaven won the screenwriting prize at Cannes, received critical acclaim in Germany and will represent the country in the competition to be nominated for best foreign-language film at the Academy Awards.
