Celebrate Citrons
CELEBRATE CITRONS
Sunday, September 28, 3-5pm
If you don't know a citron from a Buddha's Hand, or envision cooking with citron juice, you will truly enjoy and learn from this educational event in which you'll learn about the hard-to-grow citron.
Perfect citrons (called Etrog in Hebrew) fetch high prices before the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. You'll learn about the complex citron growing process, how it's prepared for market, and its place in Jewish tradition. (More info for now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esrog )
CREATIVE COOKS: PLEASE PARTICIPATE! Susie Wyshak, a convivium member, would like to distribute some citrons from the grower a week earlier for you to experiment, then share your creations (good or bad) at the event.
Contact Susie if you are interested at: susiew@gmail.com or 650-305-1100
Example uses for citrons: * Candy * Marmalade (See Corby Kummer article: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/97apr/citrus.htm) * Syrup (for drinks or cakes) * Baking * Essence * Something no one has thought of? (For example Hangar One uses John's citrons.)
FYI the grower, John Kirkpatrick, supplies to locals such as Hangar One, Monterey Market, and the Berkeley Bowl. His farm in the Central Valley is the only large scale commercial grower in the US. Unfortunately due to it being high season he can't join us but will provide plenty of interesting information and citron examples we will share.
