Seeking Refuge
Join us for an evening of film and conversation about seeking refuge in America, including screenings of two short films, Refuge(e) and Vida en Santuario, and a Q&A with the filmmakers, a local asylum seeker, and a local immigration attorney.
Refuge(e), by longtime valley local Sylvia Johnson, traces the journey of two refugees who fled violence in their home countries to seek asylum in the U.S., only to be incarcerated in a for-profit prison for months without reprieve.
Vida en Santuario, by local filmmaker Laurel Smith tells the story of Araceli Velasquez, a Salvadoran aslym seeker who has lived in sanctuary in a Denver church for nearly two years.
Attorney Claire Noone, a local attorney, will talk about her experience volunteering pro-bono legal services in the children's prison in Tornillo, Texas.
The event is a benefit for immigrant resources and all funds raised will be divided equally between the Santa Fe Dreamers Project, an immigration legal services organization, the local sanctuary movement that is supporting Araceli (featured in Vida en Santuario), and Claire Noone's border project.
