"The Moorish Connection" (From Ancient Persia to Cordoba, Spain)
Fords, NJ - Join New Jersey's premier Spanish Dance & Flamenco dance company, the widely acclaimed Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre, on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 2:30 pm for "The Moorish Connection" (From Ancient Persia to Cordoba, Spain") at Middlesex County College's Main Stage Theatre (located at 2600 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ 08818).
In the premiere of "The Moorish Connection", you will be transported back in time in an unforgettable afternoon of dance, live music and song as we explore the era of cultural interactions of Persia and Egypt into Cordoba, Spain (from 711 AD through 1492). During these centuries, Moorish music and dance fused with the Gypsy Flamenco art of that era and joined with the Hebrew chants found in the synagogues in Cordoba. A kaleidoscopic tapestry of the cultures of these ancient Moors, Jews and Spaniards is found in the drama of the Zambra Mora and the Siguiriyas, the joyfulness of the Tanguillos, with the fire of Gypsy flamenco in the Bulerias and the Rumba Gitana. Performed with live music on stage, the entire Alborada company is accompanied by "Espiritu Gitano", a music and dance group led by the famous flamenco composer/guitarist Arturo Martinez (who has accompanied renowned Gypsy dancers such as Chuny Amaya, Joaquin Fajardo, and Concha Vargas); and Elena Lentini, Founder, Director and Choreographer of Caravanserai Dance Theatre who will create fusion dances with the principal artists of Alborada.
Experience the power of Spanish Dance Theatre and this visually exciting production of dance, music and song!
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts, through a grant provided by the Middlesex County Cultural & Heritage Commission/Board of Chosen Freeholders.
